CURRENT FISHING REPORT
2-1-12 Hello Everybody,
Reds, drum and trout are in the flats. Reds and drum are eating
shrimp. Like the last month or so when the tide is low fish the
deeper drop offs. When the tide is up fish up on the flats. Limits
or very near limits are common. Also, when the tide is not quite low
enough for low water spots and not high enough for high water spots
reds will be in very shallow flats. On the days of absolutely no
wind you can run the flats and see the red fish. Trout are being
taken on soft plastics and even some top water. Trout are holding in
various bays on the deeper ends of shell reefs and the edge of
deeper grass. The weather will still be unpredictable, but if you
are flexible and can be on the water on the right days your fish box
will impress many. In other words, fun can still be had on the
water.

2-1-12 Our duck season finally came to a close
this past Sunday. Overall my clients and I had a great season.
Looking forward to next year now! Fishing has been a little
slow around here as for fishing trips booked, but I've been running
a few the last couple of weeks. I have not fished for trout at all,
but there have been a few trout brought to the cleaning table for
supper by some other anglers I've seen. There is no bait available
at the bait stands, so I know the trout are biting on artificials.
Redfish are our staple this time of year and they have been fairly
easy for me to catch due to our low water conditions, few baitfish
in the bays, and very little boat traffic. The reds seem to be
holding a bit deeper than normal in the flats, and are also holding
in the deepest part of the lakes over muddy bottoms due to our low
water levels. Mullet or "Fish Bites" have been the best natural
baits for reds, but they have also been eating plastic swim tail
baits well too.
For the next month I will primarily be at the ranch with my hog &
javelina hunters taking care of them, but I do have a couple of
fishing trips to take care of during February. If you're looking for
a fun hunt with your kids, I still have some room for those of you
that might like to get one more hunt in before summer. I would also
like to mention that for those of you that are wanting to book some
early Spring fishing trips, now is the time to start thinking about
giving me a call. My available dates are starting to fill up for
Spring Break and the weekends during March are going fast too.
Until next time

and the bet is called,

2-1-12 Hello To Everyone,
There really has not been a winter per say here in Rockport this
year. For instance the water temperature at this time is usually in
the mid-50's and it is now in the mid 60's. Only time will tell what
effect these ranges from norm will have on the coast. Fishing has
been fair by slowly working 1/8 once purple chartreuse hoggies
around the reefs. Make sure you fish it slow! I believe once we are
into the middle of February and then into March the catching should
really pick up. It usually does. Don't forget Spring Break is just
around the corner and most everything "Books" up quickly. Please
e-mail us, or call us, to
reserve the date you want.

2-1-12 Trout are holding over
soft muddy bottoms especially those with scattered shell and sea grass.
You should expect them to move shallow as the temperatures warm, but still
remain near deeper water with softer bottoms. Drifting with soft plastics
is very effective right now and should continue to be through March. My
recommended drifting areas depending on the wind direction are Estes
Flats, California Hole, Dagger Flats .Use light/translucent colors for
your soft plastics when the water is clear. Conversely, darker seems to
work better when the water is more dingy.
So
meanwhile... be safe and good fishing to you,
Capt. Ray "Slick" Appel

1-16-12
Hello Friends, Still fishing between the fronts and it has
really been hit or miss. Some days have really been good and on other
days, the fish just seem to disappear. Live Shrimp has been the best
bait when you can find it. If I can't get any live, I've been using
dead Shrimp and Gulp Shrimp under a popping cork. The flats are still
good on warm days for Reds and Trout with some Black Drum mixed in.
I'm having to move a lot but when you find them, usually they will
bite. Estes, South Bay, and Dagger flats have all been good on some
days. The Sheepshead have started showing up along the channels and
structure. This is also a good time to fish the drop along the
Intercoastal, Lydia Ann, and Shrimp Boat channels.
